Workshop on Ancient Vedic Scripts:
Mrudula Naik, Alumni of our college conducted a session on three different scripts that were used widely at different times. They are – Bramhi, Modi and Sharada scripts. Brāhmī is the modern name given to one of the oldest writing systems used in the Indian subcontinent and in Central Asia during the final centuries BCE and the early centuries CE. Sharda is used mainly in Kashmir from the 8th century CE onwards, and evolved into several variants in a few centuries. By the 10th century, the first variant, the Landa script, has appeared in Punjab, and would eventually transform into the Gurmukhi script. And by the 14th century CE, other variants such as Kashmiriand Takri also appeared in the Kashmir region. Modi is a script used to write the Marathi language, which is the primary language spoken in the state of Maharashtra in western India. Although Modi was primarily used to write Marathi, other languages such as Urdu, Kannada, Gujarati, Hindi and Tamil are also known to have been written in Modi.
Mrudula spoke about the origin and decline of these scripts. She brought out the beauty and essence of each script to our students and made them write their names in one of these scripts. It was an engrossing and fun learning session by the young alumni of our college.
