Session on “Yoga and Meditation”

Stress has become a part of life. Every day we have to face challenges and problems which create stress in our lives. In our busy lives we rarely notice that we are ignoring our physical well being. A big wide web of thoughts is not allowing your mind to be stable and calm.Your body and mind also need time to get refreshed. Yoga and meditation are proven ways to find calmness.

PCER, New Panvel had arranged a morning yoga session for a week (10th – 15th March, 2014) from 11:00 – 11:30 am. These sessions were conducted by a professional Ms. Bharati Iyer. She is a part of a professional yoga community which conducts yoga in New Panvel, sector -6.They have various sessions of yoga, power yoga and acupuncture.
The yoga sessions comprised of demonstration of Omkar, different pranayams-Bastrika, Kapalbhati, Asana-bandh, agnisaar, Brahamari. Apart from these she also demonstrated various stress buster and laughter therapy. She encouraged us to perform all the asanas along with her. In laughter therapy we learned new styles of laughing, laughing like a devil and like smooth waves.

Workshop on “Varicose Veins”

‘A sound mind resides in a sound body’ keeping this view in mind, Pillai College of Education and Research, New Panvel organized a workshop on varicose veins on 25th February, 2014. It was conducted by Dr. Kavita Puri from Preventive Healthcare initiative as a part of Guru Dakshina programme specially designed for teachers. Being in the profession which demands lot of standing, teachers are more prone to varicose veins. She threw light on how varicose veins are caused due to faulty veins. Varicose veins mostly appear in leg due to pressure exerted by our weight. She recommended some exercises that could easily be done by everyone, and would help in the prevention of varicose veins to a large extent. This was followed by a free check up by use of Plethysmograph which is a device for measuring the venous influx and outflow in the leg veins.

Talk on “Cancer awareness”

A talk on ‘Cancer awareness’ was organized by the PCER-Panvel “Well-being club” on 22nd February 2014 from 3.30 to 5.00 pm. The session was conducted by Dr. Vijay Gokhale, a retired person who works selflessly for this good cause. With cancer affecting 1 in 3 of us in our lifetime, we believe everyone needs to be given the knowledge to recognize the early signs and symptoms of cancer. Mr. Gokhale emphasized on the fact that at least 80% of common cancers can be successfully treated if they are diagnosed in the early stages. He explained how everyone can make adjustments in their lifestyle, which will give them a chance of a healthier future. He clarified the risk factors, preventive measures, myths and misconceptions of the cancer and also about the screenings and treatments available. He also showed the class a short film on detection of cancer in women. Overall, the session was enlightening, and set us all thinking with a view of modifications required in their lifestyle.
